“
I loved it from the second I read it. I love interesting female characters, and this is full of them.” – Katie Holmes
Learning that she is on the verge of losing her home and lifestyle when her husband is downsized from his job of 30 years, a woman (Diane Keaton) with no job skills takes the only position she can find as a janitor at a Federal Reserve Bank. She forges an unexpected bond with her co-workers—a hard-working single mom with two kids who shreds old money all day (Queen Latifah), and an exuberant free spirit with nothing to lose who moves the old money cart (Katie Holmes). Every day the bank shreds over a million dollars. Caught up in a system that underestimates their talents and keeps their dreams just out of reach, the women set out to even the score.
Mad Money marks the first turn on the big screen for New York 1993 and 1995 alum Holmes since her critically acclaimed roles in 2005’s
Batman Begins and
Thank You for Smoking. Based on the British film
Hot Money, Overture Films production of
Mad Money is being directed by
Thelma & Louise screenwriter Callie Khouri, who also wrote the screenplay and directed
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
What appealed to Holmes about her character? "She's funny, she's smart and just a little bit misunderstood," said Holmes. "She's involved in this crime, but she's sort of delighted to just be a part of something and have girlfriends for the first time. She's a type of person who creates a happier environment than she's actually in...I like that about her. She's a free spirit."
Holmes is scheduled to start filming
The Other Side—reported on various web sites to be an “otherworldly comedy” and “a modern-day fairytale”—within the next few weeks. The story follows a female grad student (Holmes) who, while spending a summer on remote Destiny Island for her scholarship to study fish, discovers a strange world of unusual characters hiding a dark secret. IMDb describes the film as “In the spirit of
Beetlejuice,
Alice in Wonderland,
Amelie, and
A Very Long Engagement—with a bit of
Moulin Rouge thrown in for good measure.” The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Jason Lee, and Giovanni Ribisi as Holmes’ romantic interest. Alanis Morissette and Dave Matthews (who is composing songs for the film’s soundtrack) are also listed as part of the cast.
